Large-Format Porcelain Bathroom Renovation, Mitcham

This Mitcham bathroom renovation called for a full strip-out and re-tile using large-format porcelain, finished with epoxy grout mixed to spec for a tight, stain-proof result. Here's a look at how the job came together, from substrate prep through to the finished shower.

The Brief

The client wanted a clean, low-maintenance bathroom with a seamless shower recess and a feature niche built into the vanity wall. Large-format porcelain was the right call here — fewer grout lines, easier to keep clean long-term, and a more modern finish than standard-format tile.

Setout Matters More Than People Think

With large-format tiles, setout is everything. Get it wrong and you're left with slivers of tile at the edges or a niche that doesn't sit central. We work off laser lines and level everything with tile levelling clips so the whole surface reads as one continuous plane once the grout goes in.

Epoxy Grout, Mixed to Spec

Epoxy grout is unforgiving if you rush the mix. Get the resin-to-hardener ratio wrong and it can cure too fast, discolour, or never fully harden in the joint. We mix every batch to the manufacturer's spec by weight, not by eye — it's the difference between grout that lasts the life of the bathroom and grout that's cracking or staining within a year.

The Finished Result

The finished shower and floor read as one continuous surface, with the feature niche built cleanly into the wall and no visible lippage between tiles. That's the payoff of getting the setout and grout mix right from the start. Grouting was done using Mapei Kerapoxy Easy Design epoxy grout in colours 152 and 103, chosen to complement the porcelain tones while giving a virtually stain-proof, low-maintenance finish.
