Stone, Tile & Care Questions

Practical answers about natural stone, stone benchtops, reconstituted stone, sealing, cleaning, maintenance and workmanship.

What is granite best used for?

Granite is a hard, dense natural stone commonly used for floors, benchtops, vanities, cladding and exterior applications. It is valued for strength, colour variation and relatively low maintenance compared with softer stones.

Is marble suitable for bathrooms and feature areas?

Yes. Marble is popular for bathrooms, vanities, feature walls, floors and luxury interiors. It is a natural material, so veining, small pits, fissures and colour variation are part of its character. Marble needs the right sealer and gentle maintenance.

What is travertine?

Travertine is a natural stone often used for floors, walls, outdoor paving and cladding. It usually has warm beige or tan tones and can be filled, honed, polished or left with a more textured natural appearance depending on the design.

Where can limestone be used?

Limestone is often chosen for softer, natural-looking interiors such as bathrooms, fireplaces, floors and feature areas. It is generally softer than granite, so product selection, sealing and maintenance are important.

What are slate, sandstone and quartzite used for?

Slate is commonly used for flooring, cladding and landscaping. Sandstone is often used in paving, cladding and outdoor areas. Quartzite is generally harder and brighter in appearance, making it suitable for selected flooring, walling and feature applications.

What is reconstituted stone?

Reconstituted stone is an engineered surface made from mineral-based materials and resin. It is commonly used indoors for kitchens, vanities, splashbacks, staircases, wall panelling and bathroom applications. Suitability depends on the product specification and current Australian regulations.

How much do stone benchtops cost in Melbourne?

Stone benchtop pricing depends on the stone type, slab size, edge profile, cut-outs, joins, access, removal requirements and installation detail. TN Stone can provide a project-specific quote after reviewing measurements, material selection and site requirements.

What is the best stone for kitchen benchtops?

The best stone for a kitchen benchtop depends on the design, level of use, maintenance expectations and budget. Granite, quartzite, marble, porcelain and compliant engineered stone products can all suit different kitchen projects.

Are porcelain benchtops better than engineered stone?

Porcelain and engineered stone have different strengths. Porcelain is often chosen for heat resistance, slim profiles and modern slab finishes, while engineered stone can offer consistency and practical indoor performance where compliant and suitable.

Do you fabricate custom stone vanity tops?

Yes. TN Stone fabricates and installs custom stone vanity tops for bathrooms, powder rooms and wet areas, including sink cut-outs, splashbacks, shelves and detailed stone finishes.

Do you install waterfall edge benchtops?

Yes. TN Stone installs waterfall edge benchtops, island benches, mitred edges and detailed stone finishes for premium kitchen and commercial projects.

How long does stone benchtop installation take?

Installation timing depends on the size of the project, stone selection, site access, cabinetry readiness, cut-outs and join details. Simple installations may be completed quickly once fabrication is finished, while detailed projects require more planning and coordination.

Can stone benchtops be repaired?

Some chips, marks, joins or surface issues can be assessed and repaired depending on the stone type, finish and damage. TN Stone can review the surface and recommend whether repair, refinishing or replacement is the better option.

Does natural stone need sealing?

Many natural stones benefit from sealing because sealers help reduce moisture and stain absorption. The right sealing schedule depends on the stone type, surface finish, location and level of use. High-use wet areas and outdoor areas may need more regular attention.

How should marble be cleaned?

Use warm water or a suitable pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid harsh acids, abrasive scourers and strong chemicals. Wipe spills quickly, especially acidic liquids, oils, detergents and coloured liquids that may mark or stain the surface.

How should granite be maintained?

Granite is durable, but it is still natural stone. Wipe spills promptly, avoid leaving oils or acidic liquids on the surface, and use trivets or protection under very hot or very cold items. Sealing may be recommended depending on the granite and use.

Can I use strong cleaning chemicals?

We recommend avoiding harsh acids, strong solvents, paint strippers and abrasive products unless the product is specifically suitable for that surface. Always test in a small hidden area first or ask TN Stone before using strong chemicals.

Do showers and wet areas need extra care?

Yes. Rinse soap and shampoo residue regularly, maintain ventilation, and check grout and silicone joints. Damaged grout or silicone should be addressed early to help prevent water getting behind the surface.

What's the best grout to use in a shower?

Epoxy grout is generally the best choice for a shower because it resists water, staining and mould far better than standard cement grout. Cement grout can still work in lower-moisture areas if it's sealed and maintained, but most Melbourne showers benefit from epoxy in the recess.

What's the difference between epoxy and cement grout?

Cement grout is cheaper and easier to install but more porous, so it can stain and crack over time. Epoxy grout costs more upfront and is trickier to apply, but it's virtually waterproof, more stain-resistant and lasts significantly longer in wet areas.

Should shower corners be grouted or caulked?

Internal corners and joints where tile meets tile, bath or benchtop should be caulked with flexible silicone, not grouted. Rigid grout in these movement joints tends to crack and let water through, while flat tiled surfaces should still be grouted.

Does TN Stone provide a workmanship warranty?

Yes. TN Stone Pty Ltd stands behind its workmanship. Workmanship warranty documentation is available, and warranty terms depend on the project type, materials, substrate condition, product specifications and maintenance requirements. This is in addition to rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Why choose TN Stone as your Melbourne tilers?

TN Stone Pty Ltd combines careful preparation, premium tiling, stonemason knowledge, natural stone installation experience, waterproofing knowledge, and reliable project communication. Our Melbourne tilers work as residential tilers, commercial tilers, bathroom tilers, kitchen tilers, wall and floor tilers, stone tilers, natural stone tilers, large format tile installers and porcelain tile installers for builder, homeowner and remedial projects throughout Greater Melbourne.
