What is silicone caulking used for?
Silicone caulking is a flexible sealant used at movement joints — corners, edges and junctions where two surfaces meet, such as tile-to-tile, bath, benchtop or window frame. Unlike rigid grout, it can flex with normal building movement without cracking.
Should shower corners be grouted or caulked?
Internal corners and movement joints should be caulked with flexible silicone, not grouted. Rigid grout in these joints tends to crack and let water through, while flat tiled surfaces should still be grouted.
How do I know if my silicone needs replacing?
Common signs include discolouration or mould, gaps or shrinkage away from the joint, peeling or lifting edges, and a soft or spongy feel — any of these can let water behind the tile or bench.
Can you caulk over old silicone?
No. Old or failed silicone is removed completely first so the new silicone bonds properly to a clean, dry joint. Caulking over old silicone generally fails faster and can trap moisture underneath.
