Granite Benchtops
A hard, dense natural stone that handles heat, scratching and daily use well, which makes it a common choice for busy kitchens and outdoor benchtops. Colours range from consistent speckled tones through to slabs with heavy movement. It benefits from periodic sealing, and because every slab differs it is worth viewing the actual stone before fabrication rather than choosing from a sample.
Marble Benchtops
Chosen for its veining and depth of character, marble suits vanities, splashbacks and feature areas where appearance matters most. It is softer than granite and reacts to acids such as lemon juice and wine, so etching and patina are part of living with it. Sealing helps with staining but will not prevent etching — worth knowing before committing it to a hard-working kitchen.
Dolomite Benchtops
Sits between marble and quartzite in both look and behaviour. It offers marble-like veining with better hardness, which is why slabs such as Super White and Celeste have become popular for kitchen islands. It still needs sealing and sensible care around acids, but it copes with everyday use better than most true marbles.
Quartzite Benchtops
A natural stone that is harder than granite and very resistant to scratching and heat. It gives a marble-like appearance with more durability, which suits island benches and high-use surfaces. Worth noting for fabrication: quartzite is high in crystalline silica, so cutting requires proper dust control — it is a demanding stone to work, not a cheap option.
Porcelain & Sintered Surfaces
Manufactured, non-porous surfaces available in very large formats and slim profiles. They resist heat, staining and UV, need no sealing, and work well for both indoor benchtops and outdoor kitchens. Large-format sheets allow fewer joins on long runs. They are also exempt from the engineered stone prohibition, which has made them a common replacement.

20mm vs 40mm stone benchtops: is a substrate required?
One of the most common questions from homeowners, builders and designers is whether a stone benchtop needs a substrate or additional support underneath.
The answer depends on several factors: the stone or porcelain material, slab thickness, benchtop design, cabinetry layout, overhangs, cut-outs and the manufacturer's installation requirements. At TN Stone we assess all of these before fabrication and installation so the benchtop is properly supported for its intended application.
Does a 20mm stone benchtop need a substrate?
Not automatically. A 20mm benchtop does not inherently require a full substrate underneath, but additional support may be needed depending on the material and the design. Particular attention is required around:
- Long unsupported spans
- Large island benchtops
- Sink and cooktop cut-outs
- Overhangs and breakfast bars
- Areas where the cabinetry does not provide continuous support
- Joins and other areas subject to additional loads
Some materials can be installed directly onto appropriately designed and supported cabinetry, while others require additional structural support or a substrate system. The manufacturer's technical requirements should always be followed for the specific material being installed.
What about a 40mm stone benchtop?

There is no universal answer that 40mm is stronger or better than 20mm. A well-designed 20mm benchtop with appropriate cabinetry and support can be perfectly suitable for many applications, while a 40mm-look benchtop provides a more substantial architectural appearance, particularly on kitchen islands and feature benchtops.

Granite, marble, quartzite and other natural stones can have different characteristics, including differences in strength, veining, fissures and areas that may require additional care during fabrication and installation. A natural stone benchtop should be assessed according to the actual slab and proposed design rather than simply relying on its thickness.
The cabinetry matters too
Benchtop support starts with the cabinetry. Before installation, the cabinet layout should provide suitable support for the benchtop, particularly around large spans, sinks, cooktops, joins and overhangs. Adding a substrate is not a substitute for properly designed cabinetry and structural support — the final installation should consider the stone, cabinetry, support system and benchtop design as one complete system.

Stain removal from stone benchtops
Staining does not always mean a benchtop needs replacing. In many cases marks that have absorbed into the surface can be drawn out and the finish restored, at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Natural stone and engineered surfaces are porous to varying degrees. Oils, food, cosmetics and standing water can leave marks that ordinary cleaning will not lift, particularly around sinks and along edges. The right treatment depends on the material and on what caused the mark, so we assess the surface before deciding on an approach.
