Scicluna's is a long-standing fruit and vegetable retailer, and this job covered the porcelain tiling for their new store extension at Tooronga — a working retail environment with tight timeframes and a floor that needed to handle heavy daily foot traffic and trolley loads from day one.
The Brief
Large-format porcelain tiles laid in a running pattern, matched across a long, open-plan retail floor with multiple fixed obstacles — service points, floor waste drains, and shopfitting that was going in around the same time. The floor needed to read as one continuous surface from the entrance right through to the till counter.
Commercial Floors Are a Different Job to Residential
A retail floor like this carries a different load profile to a home — constant trolley traffic, spills, and no tolerance for lippage that could catch a wheel or a heel. We work off a levelled screed base and set every tile with levelling clips so the floor sits flat, tile to tile, across the full run of the store.
Why This Approach Works for Retail Fit-Outs
- Levelled screed base means no dips or high spots under heavy trolley traffic
- Large-format porcelain minimises grout lines — easier daily cleaning for retail staff
- Levelling clips keep every joint flush, reducing trip and lippage risk
- Durable enough for constant foot traffic without early wear
The Finished Store
With the tiling complete and the shopfit-out installed around it, the floor now runs seamlessly from the entrance through the grocery aisles to the counter — consistent pattern, flush joints, and built to handle years of daily trade.
